Our Story
Maggie Thompson grew up measuring flour by feel and tasting buttercream off the spoon before she could read a recipe card. Her grandmother started baking in this same Austin kitchen in the 1960s, and her mother carried that tradition forward through the '80s and '90s. When Maggie took the apron for herself, she made one promise: nothing processed, nothing packaged, nothing that wouldn't make her grandmother proud.
Thompson's Hearth & Cakes opened its doors as a neighborhood gem β a place where locals stop in on Saturday mornings for a cinnamon roll and stay for the conversation. Maggie knows her customers by name, remembers their kids' birthday flavors, and texts back personally when you place an order. That's not a business model. That's just how she was raised.
Our values are simple and non-negotiable: every item is made from scratch with no preservatives. We source local eggs and dairy whenever possible. Seasonal flavors follow what's actually in season β not a corporate calendar. If something is sold out, it's because it was made in small batches the way it should be, and we'll have more tomorrow.
Beyond the daily bake, Thompson's has become Austin's go-to for wedding and event cakes. We've baked for backyard celebrations, Hill Country barn weddings, quinceaΓ±eras, and corporate luncheons β each one treated with the same care as the first cake Maggie ever made. When you walk through our door, you're not a transaction. You're a neighbor. Come on in.

Our neighbors are our biggest fans β and we wouldn't have it any other way.
"Maggie did our entire wedding cake plus a cupcake tower for our rehearsal dinner and I still dream about that lemon curd filling. She met with us twice before the wedding, texted photos at every stage, and showed up early to set everything up. Every single guest asked who made the cake. We'll be ordering birthday cakes from her for the rest of our lives."

"I live three blocks away and I'm at Thompson's almost every Saturday morning. The cinnamon rolls alone are worth the walk β enormous, warm, and dripping with cream cheese glaze. But honestly the bread is what keeps me coming back. The jalapeΓ±o cheddar pull-apart is the best thing I've eaten in Austin and that's saying something. This bakery is an absolute neighborhood treasure."

"We hired Thompson's to cater the pastry spread for our company's annual Austin meetup β 45 people, two-day event. The pastry platter they put together was stunning and disappeared in about twelve minutes flat. Maggie was professional, responsive, and genuinely cared that the food was perfect. Three colleagues have already placed their own personal orders. You won't find a more talented or warm baker in this city."
